For almost half a century, the Sunshine Committee has provided entertainment and companionship to senior citizens and disadvantaged children throughout the metropolitan area. Members of the committee work year-round, volunteering their time and services to raise funds through an annual holiday raffle at the Monastery. Their efforts enable a cadre of comedians, singers, musicians, magicians and Santas to travel and perform for those most in need. Calvary Hospital, Beth Israel Medical Center, Burke Rehabilitation, Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale, Lillian Booth Actors Home and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are just a few of the institutions to receive a little extra Sunshine.
Additionally, the Committee invites a thousand plus children in need to the annual Christmas/Hanukkah Spectacular and movie screening at The Ziegfield Theatre (courtesy of Friars Charles B. Moss and Ben Moss of Bow Tie Partners) where they are treated to a first run screening. Afterward, Celebrity Santa’s distribute toy-filled goodie bags, a tradition guaranteed to brighten any child’s holiday.
